The Dante was a keenly contested contest on Thursday at York but our betting tip was edged into second. There is plenty more action though with the Lockinge on Saturday and the Yorkshire Cup today…
Jack Hobbs Beaten
John Gosden had a very pleasing 1-2 in the Dante Stakes at York on Thursday but sadly for us the horses were the wrong way round, with our strongly fancied tip Jack Hobbs being beaten into second by stablemate Golden Horn, with Elm Park coming in third.
The Dante is a major Epsom Derby trial and 4/1 shot Golden Horn’s win by almost three lengths has seen him offered at odds of just 11/4 for the Derby, despite the fact he doesn’t have a run! Owner Anthony Oppenheimer may well choose to pay the hefty £75,000 late entry fee whilst Jack Hobbs is priced at odds of 8/1 for the Derby but may instead choose Royal Ascot.
Elm Park is now quoted at odds of 8/1 for the Derby and, of course, we’ll have a full preview and betting tips for that race in due course.
Two horses who fared badly in the Dante were Ol’ Man River, one of our tips, and John F Kennedy, with those two now very much out of the Derby betting at odds of 50/1 and 40/1 respectively.
Yorkshire Cup
The Yorkshire Cup sees Romsdal and Brown Panther vying for favouritism, with both quoted around the 9/4 mark with various online bookies. A little further back is Snow Sky at 3/1 and this Sir Michael Stoute colt is the one for us. Not raced since December last year we think he’ll come back very well to upset the two. This one gets underway at 3.15 so get your bets on sharpish!
Lockinge Stakes on Saturday
There is yet more really good racing with the Locking Stakes from Newbury. The 3.45 is a Group 1 contest and much of the talk is about favourite Night of Thunder. This Irish four-year-old is priced at odds of 9/4 with most firms, including Sky Bet, but the bookies clearly feel they can take him on, with many, including Coral, Betfair and Boyles, offering amazing odds enhancements for new customers seeing him priced as high as 10/1 or even 5/1 for a place!
