Ayr Gold Cup Runners and Riders – All the Entries for 2025

Saturday afternoon sees the focus of the racing world turn to the southwest coast of Scotland, as Ayr hosts its signature event of the season. Part of the Scottish racing tapestry since making its debut at Belleisle in 1804, the Ayr Gold Cup has taken place at its current home since 1908. Originally a 2m marathon, these days the £180,000 contest is one of the standout sprint handicaps of the year.

While “only” a Class 2 handicap, the list of previous winners includes Donjuan Triumphant (2017), who went on to land the British Champion Sprint Stakes in 2019, and Lochsong (1992), who is regarded as one of the greatest sprinters of all time. With the final field of runners and riders confirmed, we now know that one of the following 25 hopefuls will add their name to that list in 2025.

Highlights

Having saddled the runner-up in 2009 and 2022, Darlington trainer Michael Dods would dearly love to go one better. The betting suggests he has every chance, with his three-year-old contender Northern Ticker sitting atop the market. Making only his third start in a handicap, he is one of the least exposed runners in the field and won nicely at York last time. The 2022 runner-up Commanche Falls adds a strong second string to the Dods bow.

With five previous wins, Kevin Ryan knows just what it takes to claim the Ayr Gold Cup. The Yorkshire-based handler sends four into battle this year, headed by the James Doyle-ridden Ain’t Nobody. At first glance, his form figures of 590620 look uninspiring. However, all six of those outings came in races rated at Listed level or above. If in anything like the form which saw him finish second in the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes in August, he may go close. Of Ryan’s other runners, Bergerac and We Never Stop are among the outsiders, but Hammer The Hammer has won two of four 6f starts and finished second on his only previous visit to Ayr.

Two Tribes handed trainer Richard Spencer the biggest handicap success of his career in the 2025 Stewards Cup. Just over a month later, the four-year-old attempts to add this valuable prize to his haul. Top weight of 9st10lb makes life tough, but he arrives right at the top of his game and ran well in the 2024 Ayr Silver Cup.

Following appearances in the Ayr Silver Cup in 2021 and 2022, Strike Red finished 10th on his first crack at the big one in 2024. He will need to improve on that from a 2lb higher mark, but remains solid in the market for Richard Fahey, who won this race in 2006 and 2015.

Given his excellent record with speedballs, Clive Cox can never be ruled out in sprint events and claimed the 2009 Ayr Gold Cup with Jimmy Styles. Flash Harry flies the flag for Cox this year and has the type of unexposed profile that punters often latch onto. Only joining the yard in May of this year, the son of Harry Angel has won two of four starts in 2025, including a career-best victory at Goodwood in August.

Another to note in a typically competitive line-up is course and distance winner Alfa Kellenic, who arrives on the back of a 343-day break and makes his debut for Ivan Furtado. Scottish hopes rest on the shoulders of Jordan Electrics, who knows Ayr inside out, having made 18 previous appearances at the track. The Adrian McGuinness-trained Go Athletico is the only Irish runner in the field and could be dangerous off a mark 14lb below his peak rating.
