Colin Keane To Miss Out on Golden Goodwood Opportunity

Tuesday afternoon brought the news that Colin Keane will look on from the sidelines as one of the signature summer events unfolds. Following a disciplinary hearing, Juddmonte’s newly appointed rider received a 14-day ban for overuse of the whip. The ban will commence on 22 July and conclude on 4 August – seeing Keane miss the entirety of the 2025 Qatar Goodwood Festival.

For those following a career in the saddle, an enforced two-week holiday is never ideal. However, the timing of this ban is particularly unfortunate for Keane, who will now miss the chance to partner Field Of Gold in the Sussex Stakes.

Winning Ride Triggers Reprimand

Keane fell foul of the stewards at Sandown on Friday, 4th July. Taking the ride aboard the Juddmonte-owned Windlord, Keane faced five rivals in the Listed Gala Stakes. Sent off as the 6/4f market leader, the three-year-old rewarded favourite backers – albeit only just – when scraping home a nose clear of Caviar Heights.

At first glance, Keane’s power-packed finishing effort was a key factor in the success. However, upon review, it became clear that the determined jockey had worked a little too hard in the saddle. Keane resorted to the whip eight times during the race – twice more than permitted under the rules of British racing.

With no mitigating circumstances, e.g., essential use of the whip to ensure safety, a ban seemed inevitable. Ordinarily, an offence of this nature would result in a seven-day punishment. However, the Class 1 status of the Gala Stakes doubled the ban to 14 days.

Did Rule Difference Play a Role?

Born in County Meath, Colin Keane’s rides and wins have mostly come in his homeland – as evidenced by six Irish Champion Jockey titles. Given his consummate professionalism and cool head under pressure, it was surprising to learn that Keane had fallen foul of the much-documented whip rules. Could the difference between the British and Irish rulebooks have played a small role? In Britain, riders may use the whip six times in a flat contest – the corresponding number in Ireland is eight.

Whilst blaming no one but himself, Keane said that this difference could have impacted his actions when stating:

“I can’t blame anyone bar myself. It’s a learning curve. We’re used to eight at home in Ireland, and I can’t tell you the last time I was done for the stick, but they’re the rules.

“We know six is the amount over here, but when I was in a ding-dong battle, it just went out of my head, unfortunately.”

Field Ride Up For Grabs

Keane’s absence at the Qatar Goodwood Festival presents a golden opportunity for his fellow riders. But who will take over in the saddle as Field Of Gold bids for a third Group 1 triumph?

  • Oisin Murphy – With 11 British rides for Juddmonte this season, the current Champion Jockey lies behind only Keane in numbers. The fact that five of those rides produced wins seems likely to count in his favour. Continuing to ride for Juddmonte following his drink-driving charges, he is a prime candidate
  • Rossa Ryan – Zero from nine from Juddmonte this season but contributed to one of the operation’s finest hours when partnering Bluestocking to victory in the 2024 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
  • William Buick – The former number one at the Gosden operation. Buick continues to team up with the Newmarket team when not required to ride for his main employer, Godolphin. However, his availability will depend upon whether Ruling Court or Notable Speech take up their Sussex Stakes engagement
  • Kieran Shoemark – Unlike the other contenders, Kieran Shoemark has experience riding Field Of Gold. However, defeat in the 2000 Guineas saw the rider fall down the John & Thady pecking order. He’s three from nine for Juddmonte this season, but that may not be enough to earn a shot at redemption

First Bump in the Road for Keane

Whilst disappointing, Keane’s ban is at odds with a positive start in his new role as retained rider to Juddmonte. Since his appointment on 9 June, the 30-year-old has picked up Listed wins aboard Windlord and Blue Bolt, in addition to Group 1 success with Field Of Gold in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Given his undoubted ability and the talent contained within the Juddmonte squadron, he will surely add to his tally upon returning to the saddle.
