York’s Ebor Festival Stars in a Busy Week of Action

The northern racing scene steps into the limelight over the closing months of the flat season. As Doncaster limbers up to stage the final Classic of 2025 at the St Leger Festival, next week sees York Racecourse take centre stage. Home to one of the most famous staying handicaps in the world and a trio of Group 1 contests, the York Ebor Festival is among the most anticipated meetings of the year.

The Wednesday to Saturday fixture will dominate the headlines, but there is much to look forward to elsewhere. Windsor, Goodwood, and Newmarket all chip in with high-class events, the Racing League continues at Newcastle, and Ireland adds to the entertainment with a handful of quality events.

Stars on Show on the Knavesmire

First held in 1843, the Ebor Meeting has grown to become one of the biggest and best meetings of the British flat season, and by far the most popular multi-day fixture in the north. Fully 28 races are evenly spread over the four-day runtime, with a standout contest headlining each day.

Wednesday 20 August: Juddmonte International

Juddmonte International Stakes 2025 Betting

Officially recognised as the best race on the planet in 2020 and 2024, the 2025 edition of the Juddmonte International may go close to repeating the feat. The mighty City Of Troy stormed to victory for Aidan O’Brien in 2024. 12 months on, the Ballydoyle maestro has strong claims of following up with sensational Coral-Eclipse winner Delacroix. With Prince Of Wales’s Stakes champ Ombudsman, Japanese star Danon Decile, and unbeaten French raider Daryz lying in wait among the opposition, the Day 1 highlight is not to be missed.

The Great Voltigeur Stakes tops the undercard and has emerged as a key St Leger trial, despite the shorter 1m4f trip. The Group 3 Acomb Stakes for the juveniles can also identify a future Classic star, with 2000 Guineas winner Chaldean and Irish 2000 hero Phoenix Of Spain featuring on the recent roll of honour.

Thursday 21 August: Ladies Day

Fittingly, on the track’s official Ladies Day, the female performers grab the spotlight in the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks. Held over the 1m4f trip, the £600,000 contest sees the current Classic stars tackle their elders. Epsom and Irish Oaks queen Minnie Hauk dominates the market for Aidan O’Brien, with David O’Meara’s beautiful grey Estrange expected to provide the stiffest opposition.

Continuing the theme, the juvenile fillies lock horns over 6f in the supporting Lowther Stakes. Ed Walker claimed the 2024 edition with Celandine and is responsible for this year’s favourite, Royal Fixation. Losing out by just a neck to the reopposing Venetian Sun in the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes, she’s 3lb better off at the weights here.

Friday 22 August: Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes

Nunthorpe Stakes 2025 Betting

Speed is the name of the game in the Day 3 feature. Open to fillies, colts, and geldings aged two and above, the Nunthorpe Stakes is the most inclusive 5f Group 1 event of the season. On paper, the youngsters face a tough task to master their bigger, stronger rivals. However, a two-year-old is fancied to go close in 2025, with Ger Lyons flying filly Lady Iman sitting atop the market. Others to note include Arizona Blaze, who bids to continue Adrian Murray’s summertime hot streak, and Aussie mare Asfoora, who finished fourth here in 2024.

A contrasting pair of Group 2 events adds to the excellent Friday card. The Gimcrack Stakes sees the juvenile speedballs do battle over 6f, while stamina is the number one requirement in the 2m½f Lonsdale Cup.

Saturday 23 August: Sky Bet Ebor

Ebor Handicap 2025 Betting

Newly promoted to Group 1 status, the Sky Bet City Of York Stakes has attracted a stellar list of entries, including Classic winners Rosallion and Notable Speech, French stars Maranoa Charlie and Lazzat, and forgotten horse, The Lion In Winter.

It takes a special handicap to trump a Group 1, but the Ebor is just that. Held over a demanding 1m6f, the signature event promises to be the biggest betting heat of the week. John & Thady Gosden know what it takes to prevail, having saddled Trawlerman to victory in 2022, and send the well-fancied French Master into battle this year. The promising London City is set to represent Aidan O’Brien, but fellow Irish training titan Willie Mullins may hold the ace in the pack. An unlucky-in-running fourth in the 2024 edition, Hipop De Loire warmed up for this with an 11-length romp over hurdles at Galway.

Best of the Rest

With so much going on, it might be hard to take your eyes away from York. However, diverting your attention elsewhere will reveal a host of highlights, including:

  • Thursday 21 August: Racing League Heads to the North East – Newcastle stages Race Week 5 in the exciting team competition. Can London & The South hold on to their lead ahead of the final fixture at Southwell?
  • Friday 22 August: Hopeful Stakes – On an excellent day for sprint fans, Newmarket adds to the excitement with a Listed event won by Group 1 stars Fayr Jag and Limato in previous years
  • Saturday 23 August: Juvenile Stars Shine at the Curragh – Early 2026 Classic clues are on show at the Curragh in the Futurity Stakes and Debutante Stakes. Aidan O’Brien has claimed eight of the last nine editions of the former event and has no fewer than 17 entries in 2025
  • Saturday 23 August: Winter Hill Stakes – It’s the biggest day of the year at Windsor, as the picturesque track stages the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes and the Listed August Stakes
  • Sunday 24 August: Group-Race Double from Goodwood and Naas – The week ends in style with the Group 3 Celebration Mile at Goodwood. The Juddmonte duo of Lead Artist and Jonquil head the betting in 2025. Over in Ireland, Babouche, California Dreamer, and Nighteyes stand out among the current list of entries for the Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes

With so much top-class action on offer, racing fans are in for a week to remember.
