Newmarket July Festival Tops Cracking Week of Action

This week sees not one but two excellent multi-day meetings as the racing programme rolls on into July. For northern racegoers, the John Smith’s Cup fixture at York represents one of the highlights of the racing year. However, the biggest headlines will be made at the home of the flat racing game, as Newmarket hosts the always-excellent July Festival.

The aforementioned fixtures provide more than enough entertainment for most weeks, but the action doesn’t end there. Elsewhere in Britain and Ireland, a host of Pattern Class contests set the scene for the standout fixtures at the tail end of the week. Let’s take a closer look at what’s in store.

Midweek Menu Worth a Look

Those busy plotting their weekend punts would be unwise to overlook the midweek action. Whilst Monday is typically quiet, from there on in, the week provides a steady stream of highlights, with the following, in particular, worth taking in.

  • Tuesday 8th July: Pipalong Stakes – The second of five Listed events to take place at Pontefract. Held over the one-mile trip, the 2025 edition looks set to attract a quality field, including the promising Skellet from the Ralph Beckett operation
  • Wednesday 9th July: Stanerra Stakes – With five wins in the past 10 years, Aidan O’Brien likes to target this Group 3 contest at Fairyhouse. The master of Ballydoyle has Island Hopping and Butterfly Wings amongst the entries in 2025
  • Thursday 10th July: Brownstown Stakes – Successful on four occasions since 2015, Ger Lyons has been the trainer to follow in this Group 3 contest for the fillies and mares. His sole entry, Chantez, seems sure to attract market support
  • Friday 11th July: Irish Midlands National – We may be in the heart of the flat campaign, but the County Westmeath track of Kilbeggan ensures National Hunt die-hards have something to cheer. 3m1f is the trip in a race won by subsequent Irish Grand National hero Freewheelin Dylan in 2020

Thursday 10th – Saturday 12th July: Newmarket July Festival

Following the Craven Meeting in April and the Guineas Festival in May, Newmarket steps back into the spotlight with this excellent three-day event.

Day One is headlined by a pair of Group 2 contests in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes and the July Stakes. The former event may serve up a fascinating clash between globetrotting stars Ghostwriter and Military Academy, while the latter sees a field of talented juvenile sprinters do battle over six furlongs.

Princess Of Wales's Stakes 2025 Betting

In keeping with the Ladies Day theme, the highlight of Day Two is the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, restricted to the fillies and mares. Duke Of Cambridge Stakes winner Crimson Advocate and 1,000 Guineas heroine Desert Flower are two of the more eye-catching British entries. Aidan O’Brien has five in the race, headed by January, who finished a slightly unlucky third in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Newmarket saves the best until last with an outstanding Day Three. Won by talents including Muhaarar, Harry Angel, and Alcohol Free in recent years, the £600,000 July Cup is the natural next port of call for those who lined up in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.

July Cup 2025 Betting

Flora Of Bermuda finished third in that Royal Ascot event but heads the market here, with Symbol Of Honour, Inisherin and Whistlejacket among the likely opposition. The Group 2 Superlative Stakes for the juveniles and the Bunbury Cup Handicap are the standout events on the undercard as the meeting draws to a close.

Friday 11th – Saturday 12th July: John Smith’s Cup Meeting at York

With the July Festival already underway, Friday sees the most prestigious track in the north enter the fray. Speed is the name of the game in the opening day highlight of the Summer Stakes – a race won by July Cup favourite Flora Of Bermuda in 2024.

The Group 3 Silver Cup Stakes tops the bill in terms of class on Day Two. However, the John Smith’s Cup Handicap is the big betting heat on the card. The John & Thady Gosden runner Burrito arrives seeking a hat-trick and is currently out on his own at the head of the market.

And if all that still isn’t enough, the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot on Saturday afternoon is another not-to-be-missed event in an excellent week for racing fans.
